NTs Shannon Wilson signs with Daemen College
NORTH TONAWANDA The blue Daemen sweat jacket and the ear-to-ear smile told the whole story when North Tonawanda High School senior Shannon Wilson officially signed her letter of intent on Wednesday to play volleyball for Daemen College.
Sitting at a table in the NT school library, flanked by Lady Jacks coach Jessica Anderson and Daemen coach Mark Parisi, the 17-year-old Wilson signed on the dotted line to be part of the Wildcat volleyball squad. All day I was excited and nervous, said Wilson after the signing.
I watched the (sectional final) games at Daemen (Tuesday) and thought this is my future home gym. It was really exciting and then to actually sign it, I know (where) Im going and I can relax and focus on school and volleyball.
Posting impressive career numbers that include 1,003 digs, 204 services aces and 847 kills, 470 of those coming this season. Wilson is a two-time All-Niagara Frontier League first team selection, an All-Western New York first teamer and a member of the National Honor Society.
Impressed by Wilson the athlete, Coach Parisi was even more in awe of Shannon Wilson the person. In his first full season at the helm of the Wildcats Parisi said hes looking to forge a group of young women whos commitment to character is every bit as strong and important as commitment to the game.
A believer in positive motivation Parisi wants a core of ladies on the team who not only share his philosophy but can help spread that message within the ranks of the team. Wilson fits that bill. The kind of atmosphere Im trying to build at Daemen right now is one based on a winning spirit and carrying that positive attitude in everything we do. A work ethic that goes along with it and from what Ive seen of Shannon over the last couple of years with the different teams and coaches shes played on shes basically done whatever theyve asked her to do didnt complain and has been a great teammate and thats what Im looking for, said Parisi.
Shannons parents, Lyman and Lucia Wilson, all four of her grandparents and several of her Lady Jacks teammates were in attendance as Wilsons dream of playing college volleyball came to fruition. It most certainly is a dream come true, Shannons father, Lyman said with pride.
Shes worked very hard over the years and shes given up a lot. A lot parties and dances to be on the road playing travel softball and volleyball. A feeling echoed by long time friend and Jacks co-captain Mary Connell. Im so happy for her. Her passion for the sport is just so unbelievable, said Connell. Im really glad that we could be here and see it. Shes a great person. After our last game we went to each other hugged each other, balling our eyes out.
Looking to become a teacher like her mother, Lucia, Shannon plans to study foreign language education. I talked to a bunch of the girls who will be my future teammates and it was like wow, this is all (really) happening, Wilson said with a smile.
